WhatsApp, the world’s most popular instant messaging app, has added a new screen-sharing feature to enhance the video call experience for users. This new addition puts WhatsApp in direct competition with other videoconferencing products such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Apple’s FaceTime, and Zoom.

On Tuesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new feature that allows users to share documents and photos with others. Additionally, users can share their shopping cart with phone contacts via video calls. To use this feature, users need to click on the Share icon and then choose between sharing their entire screen or a specific app.

According to WhatsApp, the feature of screen-sharing will be available on Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop formats. The release will happen in phases, meaning that some users may receive it earlier than others.

The app recently introduced a Landscape mode for video calls, which enables users who are in portrait mode to have a more immersive experience. However, it should be noted that the screen-sharing feature isn’t entirely new, as some beta users were able to access it back in May 2023.

As reported by WABetaInfo, a site dedicated to discovering new WhatsApp features before their launch, those who installed the Android 2.23.11.1 update from Google Play Store would get it. This happened in May. 

Teams often use screen-sharing to collaborate virtually. Although Google Meet and Teams already offer this service, it will be fascinating to observe how the Meta-owned product performs, considering it is more of a consumer technology platform than a productivity app.
